We had an excellent Grand Rounds this week! Dr. Yates led our monthly Morbidity & Mortality Conference discussing pathology ranging from Dabigatran overdose to acute limb ischemia. We had an exciting CPC with hypomagnesemia presenting as new onset psychosis with Drs. Joshi & Lang. Finally, Dr. Gallen led a lecture and small group discussion on tracheostomies and their complications.

Join us as we recap our last week of Grand Rounds, including our first intern lecture of the year focusing on pericarditis & myocarditis. Learn about the art of skillfully resuscitating a patient with an LVAD, as well as the tips/tricks for effectively communicating with patients, from our senior residents. Learn how to confidently handle ENT emergencies in the community and orthopedic trauma in a limited-resource settings. Our pharmacy colleagues gave us an timely update on use of Precedex in the ED, as well as Andexxa vs. PCC for reversal of Xa-inhibitors. Lastly, our pediatric EM colleagues joined us to discuss to subtle difference in diagnosis and management of neonatal & pediatric seizures compared to adults.

We had a great week in Grand Rounds. The first lecture included a debate about the use of rocuronium or succinylcholine in paralysis for intubation by Drs. Lang and Plash. Drs. Ryan and Moellman led a thrilling discussion through some of their most interesting and thought provoking cases of their careers. Pharmacists Nicole Harger and Paige Gaber then discussed updates in pharmacy, specifically the use of droperidol and anticoagulation reversal in the emergency department. We learned about cognitive biases and clinical decision making from Dr. Hill. The day wrapped up with Dr. Knight showcasing the NIH stroke scale with Dr. Foreman.

Dr. Ludmer kicked things off with this month's Morbidity & Mortality conference where we discussed C. Diff, spinal cord compression, LP in the setting of anticoagulation and cardiac arrest with an LVAD. Dr. Stettler led the next segment of our longitudinal leadership curriculum with a look at the mentor/mentee relationship. We finished up with a soapbox lecture by Dr. Titone on conflict resolution and an R3 follow up by Dr. Bernardoni who discussed the crashing patient with right ventricular failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

In our first Grand Rounds of the academic year, we started with Dr. Pancioli teaching us about the history of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Palmer discussed team work and the case for building social capital and Dr. LaFollette worked through the disposition of patients with chest pain. Our clinical pharmacist Chris Droege, PharmD discussed the evolving landscape of agents we have to reverse oral anticoagulants.
