It was an exciting week of Grand Rounds! We had the honor of hearing from legendary UCEM graduate Dr. Susan Stern who was the Dr. Gibler Visiting Professor. She discussed hemorrhage in trauma and the changing landscape of leadership in medicine. This was followed by operations updates with Dr. Palmer, and Dr. Laurence discussed AIDS-defining illnesses in her clinical knowledge lecture. The day concluded with a review of some Air Care cases. Enjoy the review of this week’s Grand Rounds! We began the morning with Dr. Minges giving us his pro-tips on how to identify cardiac tamponade with ultrasound. Following this, we learned about high-yield management pearls about Carotid Blowout Syndrome and SCIWORA from Dr. Scanlon and Dr. Baez respectively. We concluded the day with AirCare Grand Rounds, where we learned how to deal with refractory hypoxia, postpartum hemorrhage, and utilize the V-scan for ultrasound.

The week started off with our AirCare team discussing indications for procedures performed pre-hospital. The AirCare team continued by taking us through several cases in our quarterly AirCare M&M. We then got some oral boards practice with Drs. McDonough and LaFollette. The day finished with a simulation led by Dr. Hill covering patients who wish to leave AMA as well as the terrifying lengthening QTc.
