We had a jam packed grand rounds this week, which started off with a simulation and ultrasound demonstration from our AirCare team. Next Dr. Vaughan took us through the dermatologic emergencies we cannot miss, and Dr. Ferreri discussed why every decompensated patient should receive an sonographic waves for assessment. We continued with our third installment of Landmark Studies of EM, covering the important papers on traumatic resuscitations. Finally, Dr. Bryant took us through a global health inspired case and Dr. Otten taught us about the medications that can be toxic to pediatrics in small doses.

Gillespie and Continenza worked through a dramatic case combining vision changes and rash, Dr. Wright reminded us to not forget the esophagus in our patients with chest pain and Dr. Connelly gave a fantastic overview of EMS provider education and systems structure in her R4 Capstone. Finally, our incredible visiting professor, Dr. Megan Rybarcyzk gave us insight into building an emergency medicine education program in the midst of a pandemic and provides tips and tricks for those seeking a career in global health.

This week’s Grand Rounds was kicked off by Dr. Fadlalla from Internal Medicine, who described his journey to a career in global health. Dr. Rafferty from Colorectal Surgery discussed anorectal disease in the Emergency Department. Drs. Milligan and Hall expertly led us through the diagnosis and treatment of dyspepsia. CPC featured a case of HUS from Dr. Winslow that Dr. Continenza walked us through. We finished with a review of genitourinary disease by Drs. Gawron, Hassani, Laurence, and Walsh.

This week’s Grand Rounds started off with Journal Club covering everyone’s favorite medication, droperidol! We followed this with a blast from the past, alum and guest lecturer Dr. Iserson who delivered this quarter’s Global Health Grand Rounds. The Sports Medicine Interest Group gave key points on the hand, elbow, and hip exam. Finally, the day ended with video review of two pediatric resuscitations to make us all pause the next time we see the chief complaint “shortness of breath” pop onto the trackboard.
