Dr. Freiermuth kicked off this week’s Grand Rounds with a recap of how to approach research in EM. Dr. Leech demonstrated the value to hemorrhage control and fistula complications. Drs. Harty and Comiskey faced off in a CPC case of DRESS syndrome and finally Drs. Gottula and Skrobut gave our quarterly Air Care Grand Rounds on HEMS stroke management.

This week, we started things off with a great Quarterly Sim led by our faculty. The oral boards cases, led by Drs Stettler and Roche, involved an acute presentation of holiday heart, a post-partum patient with flash pulmonary edema, and a very questionable spider bite. The simulation, led by Drs Fernandez, Hill and Stolz, focused on two patients that were in shock: one due to a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and one due to a pericardial tamponade. We then moved on to the pediatric side of things, where Dr. Gleimer discussed neonatal rashes, and we took a look at pediatric syncope with Dr. Fananapazir.

Taming the SRU Case Follow-Up: GSW to the Head with Dr. Grosso

  • In one census: 66% of violent deaths are suicide, with 30k suicide deaths annually in the US
  • ~50% of suicide attempts include firearms
  • GSW to head mortality is 80%, and 71% die on scene
  • ~40% of those who survive to hospital have favorable outcomes
  • Favorable prognosis: GCS>8, normal pupillary reaction, absence of coagulopathy of trauma/hemodynamic instability
