An excellent Wednesday here in Cincinnati! We started out the day with our ultrasound grand rounds where ultrasound fellow Dr. Broadstock took us through an interactive lecture on advanced cardiac ultrasound. This was followed by a lecture by faculty member Dr. Irankunda who discussed the importance of names and embracing individuality. Finally, we ended the day with a combined session with our pediatric colleagues where we covered pediatric procedures, foreign body aspiration, and a neonatal potpouri. We can’t wait for next week!

This week was jam pack in Grand Rounds. We covered best practice tips for POCUS and Cardiac Arrest with Dr. Stolz. Dr. Pensak talked with us about the Emergency Department Implications of the Dobbs v Jackson. We buffed up our teaching skills with Dr. Santen and “Not another Boring Lecture”. Dr. Roche and Wilderness Medicine Faculty taught us how to improvise important medical equipment. To end the day, Dr. Kiser showed us how to better care for and treat the pain of patients with chronic medical conditions.

This week’s Grand Rounds opened with Dr. Koehler leading small group discussions on the applications and limitations of VBGs. Dr. Bonomo expertly identified the correct test of choice and diagnosis in Dr. Spigner’s CPC. Dr. Soria then gave an interesting talk on the history behind naloxone as well as common uses. Finally, the Air Care team led a great hands-on procedure workshop!

Just the thing for the faint of heart!

As Emergency Physicians, we pride ourselves on taking care of critically ill, undifferentiated patients. As technology as advanced, we’ve been able to add more and more tools to our arsenal to help guide the management of these patients. One such tool is cardiac ultrasonography. It is able to give us dynamic information about the patient, rule out life threatening pathology such as tamponade, and even help guide resuscitation in cardiac arrest. All of this, however hinges on the physician having the knowledge and skills to employ this in our fast paced environment. Are your skills up to snuff? Find out after the jump!
