This week Grand Rounds kicked off with a range of complicated cases including of choledocholithiasis, syphilis, and hyperthermic-associated toxidromes. Dr. Bryant than presented on burns in a low resource setting for our global health lecture. Drs. Goel and Thompson discussed the decision rules for head and C-spine imaging. And Drs. Gallen, Brower and Finney finished off our resident lectures for our core content.

This week featured an all-start lineup of resident lectures. Dr. Golden started us off with an amazing M&M, followed by Dr. Mullen enlightening us on eating disorders and the management in the ED. Dr. Iparraguirre taught us about the management of the severely burned patient. Dr. Laurence and Dr. Lagasse faced off in another interesting CPC. Finally Dr. Goff, hit it home with review of pneumonia severity scores and their clinical context.

In this week's grand rounds, Dr. Stolz discussed all things DVT and the modified two-point compression study for lower extremity clots. In our recurring EM-neuro combined conference, Dr. Stettler discussed the recent DAWN trial results, and how to incorporate CT perfusion studies into our acute ischemic stroke decision trees. In our Quarterly Sim, we discussed the management of the crashing patient from a house fire, and practiced our escharotomy skills. In our mock oral boards, we went through cases on STEMI, carbon monoxide exposure and limb ischemia. Finally, Dr. Lane discussed the workup of acute diarrhea in the adult population, and Dr. Shah went through a particularly unique toxidrome presentation in his R4 Case Follow Up.

In the penultimate Grand Rounds of 2017 Drs. Klaszky and Spigner gave us an in-depth look of the evidence behind treatment of asthma in the ED and walked up through their new QI/KT pathway. Dr. Summers provided a great review of the resuscitation of the burn victim. We closed things out with our quarterly PEM-EM combined simulation sessions which included cases of children with difficulty breathing, seizure and stridor.

Burns, bubbling airways and bradycardic arrests: all part of this week's grand rounds that brought plenty of knowledge our way. This week we heard from Dr. Dale, burn surgeon, about the latest in burn management. Dr. Carleton ran through some of his hardest airway cases for an infallable mental model of intubation. Our R3s gave a practical session on transvenous pacer placement and Dr Kircher gave us his clinical soapbox of pneumonia management.

Grand Rounds Recap - 7/20/2016

This week Dr. Knight taught us about the management of seizures and about how to manage our own fear. We were schooled on the hypotensive LVAD patient by Drs. Boyer, DeVries and Winders. We learned about oncologic emergencies from Dr. Continenza. Dr. Gorder tamed the SRU and taught us about chemical asphyxiation and burn injuries in the process.
