After a brief hiatus we returned to grand rounds this week and started off with an in depth discussion on common overdoses and treatments in the ED with our guest lecturer and expert toxicologist Dr. Gillian Beauchamp. We then got some hands on time with the new hand held ultrasound machines that are now available on Air Care as well as reviewed pre-hospital management of traumatic pneumothoaces with Dr. Humphries. Finally, airway guru Dr. Carleton took us on a deep dive on airway management in angioedema.

This week in grand rounds we started off reviewing the importance of matching the minute ventilation post intubation with airway master Dr. Carleton. We also reviewed salicylate overdose treatment with Dr. Owens as well as common and life threatening SCUBA emergencies with Dr. Comiskey. Finally, we finished the week off with a severe calcium channel blocker overdose and reviewed the treatment strategies to combat this extremely deadly overdose.

The first grand rounds of 2018 started out with an R4 Simulation that highlighted the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of salicylate toxicity.  This was followed by a guest lecture by Dr. Richard Sears, who discussed the benefits of wellness and mindfulness, and how we can apply them in the workplace.  Dr. Hall then went over the utility and application of various labs used to evaluate patients with sickle cell disease who present in vaso-occlusive crisis.  We then finished the conference with a case based discussion on septic bursitis led by Dr. Mike Klaszky.
