Medical necessity - Evaluate the aorta for presence or absence of aneurysm

Focused Question -  Is there an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

Guidelines

1.) Obtain a video clip(s) of the entire abdominal aorta in the transverse plane from the xiphoid process to the umbilicus.

2.) Obtain static images in the transverse plane, measuring the anterior-posterior and width of the aorta in 3 zones:

  • Proximal (level of the celiac trunk)
  • Mid (below SMA, no specific landmarks)
  • Distal (level just before the bifurcation to the iliacs)

Proximal Aorta Measurement

Mid-Aorta Measurement

Distal Aorta Measurement

Aorta measurement at iliac arteries

Critical measurements

ABDOMINAL ANEURYSM IS DEFINED AS > 3CM.

***Exam is non-diagnostic for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm if ANY segment of the abdominal aorta is not seen.
